How game ads actually load
Game ads are fetched by embedded SDKs that request ad assets from network endpoints before displaying them. Interstitials preload in the background the moment a level starts; banners refresh on timers; rewarded videos buffer while you play. Every one of those fetches is a network request to a known ad domain — which makes them interceptable.
What blocking changes — honestly
With a filtering firewall active:
- Interstitials: the fetch fails, so the ad slot times out and is skipped. This removes the majority of interruptions and makes sessions dramatically faster.
- Banners: stay empty or collapse. No flicker, no reload churn.
- Tracking: the SDK's telemetry calls (session attribution, device fingerprinting) are dropped — this is often the bigger win than the ads themselves.
- Rewarded ads: these will not grant rewards if they never load — the game verifies viewing server-side. If you deliberately watch rewarded ads for in-game currency, add a bypass rule for that one game.
The balanced setup: block everywhere, bypass where you choose
NULLOG's App Rules tab gives per-app control: protection on by default for all 140+ apps, with individual bypass switches. The practical pattern users settle on:
- Leave global blocking on — every game gets the clean treatment by default.
- Bypass only games where you intentionally watch rewarded ads for currency.
- Keep blocking on for games you paid for — paid games with leftover ad SDKs are the most offensive case of all.
The alternative route: paid versions
Many games sell a one-time "remove ads" purchase that flips a server-side flag. If you love a game, that purchase remains the cleanest support-the-developer path. Network blocking is the solution for the long tail of games you merely try — the dozens of installs where a $4.99 removal is never worth it.
