Why your Android shows so many ads

Ads on Android are not only a browser problem. Most apps you install carry an advertising SDK — a code library from networks like Google AdMob, Unity Ads, AppLovin, Meta Audience Network or Pangle. When the app runs, the SDK fetches banners, interstitials and video ads from remote ad servers, even while the app sits idle in the background.

That is why blocking ads inside Chrome alone never feels like enough. The ads live inside games, news apps, weather widgets, file managers and even flashlights. To remove them everywhere, you have to filter network traffic itself, not just one browser.

A hosts-file edit is the classic purist approach, but it requires root, which voids warranties and breaks banking apps. Browser extensions only cover one app. DNS-level filtering covers everything but cannot see which app made the request. The modern solution is a local VPN firewall: Android's built-in VpnService creates a loopback adapter on your own device, and filtering happens in RAM — nothing is routed to any external server.

How to block ads system-wide with NULLOG (step by step)

  1. Download the APK from the official release page — the 1.94 MB universal build installs on Android 8.0 and newer, ARM64 or x86.
  2. Install it. If Android warns about unknown sources, allow installs for your browser or file manager once. This is normal for apps distributed outside the Play Store.
  3. Tap the shield to start protection and accept the one-time local VPN prompt. This prompt is a stock Android dialog for the VpnService API — NULLOG never routes traffic anywhere remote.
  4. Done. The Radix-Trie engine matches every DNS request against curated ad, tracker and malware domains in under 0.4 ms and sinkholes them to 0.0.0.0.
Tip: Open the App Rules tab and add bypass entries for banking apps first. NULLOG ships intelligent presets for financial apps, so logins and payment flows never break.

What to expect after one day

On a typical device with 100+ installed apps, the first day usually shows 1,500–3,000 blocked requests and 300–500 MB of saved data. Games load faster, news apps stop reloading banners mid-scroll, and NULLOG starts listing the background telemetry SDKs that were phoning home — Meta, Firebase, AppsFlyer and friends — every time your screen was off.

Put it into practice with NULLOG

NULLOG runs every technique in this guide locally on your Android — ads, trackers and telemetry filtered in device memory. No root. No cloud. No logs.
